Japan temperatures soar over 40C, marking first 'cruelly hot day'

Japan recorded its first officially defined “cruelly hot day” after temperatures reached 40C in three central cities. Authorities issued widespread heatstroke alerts as hundreds of people required hospital treatment in Tokyo and dangerous heat was forecast to continue.
